How to Prepare for the ABRSM Exam

Did you know that at BCC Music Houston, we can help you prepare for the ABRSM exams? Whether you’re new to these exams or already considering taking them, we’re here to guide you through the process!

What Are the ABRSM Exams?

The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) exams are internationally recognized music exams that assess a student’s performance, technical skills, sight-reading, and aural abilities. They offer graded levels from beginner to advanced, serving as a structured way to develop musicianship and track progress.

Why Is Taking the ABRSM Exam a Big Deal?

Earning an ABRSM certificate is a significant achievement. It not only validates your musical skills but also enhances your credibility as a musician. Many academic institutions recognize ABRSM grades, and higher levels can contribute to college applications or even professional music careers.

How to Prepare for the ABRSM Exam

Preparing for the ABRSM exam requires dedication and time. On average, students take several months to master the necessary skills and repertoire. But don’t feel discouraged—it’s a journey that will significantly improve your playing! Here’s how you can get started:

  • Be at the Right Level: Your instructor will guide you to ensure you are ready for the grade you are applying for. For example, piano students should be at least in Book 2 of John Thompson before starting their ABRSM preparation.

  • Practice Regularly: Consistent practice is key. Focus on technical exercises, scales, and repertoire pieces required for your grade.

  • Develop Sight-Reading Skills: Sight-reading is an essential component of the exam, so include daily sight-reading practice in your routine.

  • Enhance Aural Skills: The exam includes an aural test, assessing your ability to recognize melodies, rhythms, and musical details by ear.

  • Understand Music Theory: A solid understanding of music theory is crucial, especially as you progress to higher grades.

  • Perform with Confidence: Performance skills are a major part of the exam, so practice performing in front of others to build confidence.

Performance Exams for Beginners

For beginners, we recommend starting with the Performance Exam, which is done via video submission. This removes the pressure of performing in front of an examiner in person, helping students build confidence in their skills. The Performance Exam allows students to focus on their playing without the added stress of live assessment. You can take a Performance Exam up to Grade 5, giving you plenty of time to develop your abilities before tackling the theory and aural components of the traditional exam.

We want to take away the fear of something that may seem overwhelming while also helping students recognize that achieving an ABRSM certification requires dedication and skill.

What Do Examiners Look for During Grading?

During the exam, the examiner assesses:

  • Accuracy: Playing the correct notes and rhythms

  • Expression & Musicality: Dynamics, phrasing, and articulation

  • Technique: Finger positioning, bowing (for string instruments), and overall control

  • Aural & Sight-Reading Skills: Ability to recognize and replicate musical patterns and sight-read fluently

How Is the Grade Calculated?

The ABRSM exam is scored out of 150 points:

  • Pass: 100–119 points

  • Merit: 120–129 points

  • Distinction: 130–150 points
